NYCFC Outlasted By New England, Suffers 1st Home Loss Of Season

New York City Football Club suffered their first loss of the season on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium as they were shutout, 1-0, by the New England Revolution.

After a scoreless first half, New England broke through in the 71st minute when Brian Wright was in the right place at the right time, as he got the rebound off a shot from Cristian Panilla, to make it 1-0.


This came right after NYCFC had their two best chances of the night. David Villa came down the left side and had a great look but shot it into the leg of a New England defender in the 61st minute, and then in the 67th when Villa got a feed from Maxi Moralez at the top of the box on the left side and fired it just past the right post.

NYCFC had one last chance in the 93rd minute when they received a sideline throw-in deep in New England terriory.

Anton Tinnerholm took the throw-in, and it got to Villa along the sideline on the left, and he fired it to Moralez in the box, and he got off a big shot but just missed.

This was a bookend to a game in which NYCFC almost got a goal in the fifth minute when New England defender Michael Mancienne almost headed it into his own net, but it went off the crossbar.

With the loss, NYCFC falls to 14-6-8, with 48 points, in third place in the East. They remain six points behind Atlanta (16-6-5, 54 points) and seven points behind the first-place Red Bulls (17-4-7, 55 points).

New England improved to 8-9-10, with 33 points, are in seventh place in the East, now just three points behind Montreal (11-3-14, 36 points) for the sixth and final playoff spot.

NYCFC Head Coach Domenec Torrent was asked if he was concerned about that the team has lost its way with only two wins in the last seven games, "I think you talk about the result and not the way we play here. Today the soccer wasn't fair with us and today our team played really well. I'm not happy with the result but I'm happy with the way we were able to play. The last game we played very bad. I am angry with them, but today they wanted to win the game. When we lost in Columbus it was because we played really, really bad and I think we played well tonight. I'm not happy but I'm not worried about the result because today they played really well. The difference is you have to be clinical when you have the chance. I'm not angry with them but I agree, when you look at the sport in general it's about the result, not the play. Right now the battle is not over for us."

NYCFC did dominate this one, as they had 65.5 percent possession, and poured in 28 shots, with five on target, compared to 11 overall shots for New England, with six of them on target.
