LeMahieu Named American League Player Of The Week

D.J. LeMahieu.

Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu, who was just named an All-Star Game starter in his first year in New York, has been chosen the W.B. Mason American League Player of the Week.

2019 All-Star pitcher Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals has been named the W.B. Mason National League Player of the Week.

LeMahieu earned his first career AL Player of the Week Award after a banner weekend in London and is the second Yankees player to be awarded weekly honors in 2019, joining his teammate Luke Voit (April 29th).

Scherzer claimed his fifth career Player of the Week Award, and his fourth with the Nationals, most recently doing so last year for the period ending April 15th. Max now trails his teammate Ryan Zimmerman (5) and his former teammate Bryce Harper (6) for the most weekly awards in Nationals history.

In recognition of their Player of the Week Awards, DJ LeMahieu and Max Scherzer will each be awarded a specially engraved watch courtesy of Artinian.

DJ LeMahieu, New York Yankees (@dj_lemahieu):
· The versatile infielder batted .625 (15-for-24) with eight runs scored, three doubles, a triple, two home runs, 10 RBI and a 1.083 slugging percentage across five games played.
· Enters today’s action with a 14-game hitting streak dating back to June 14th, in addition to a six-game multi-hit streak dating back to June 23rd. Is the first Yankee since Carlos Beltrán in 2014 to post a multi-hit streak of six-or-more games. DJ’s 35 multi-hit games are the most for a Yankees player across the Club’s first 82 games of a season since Alfonso Soriano also logged 35 multi-hit efforts in 2003.
· Enters play today in the midst of 12-game streak in which he has notched at least one hit and a run scored dating back to June 16th. Tied for the sixth-longest streak in franchise history, trailing only Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig (15, 1930), Joe DiMaggio (14, 1941) and Babe Ruth (14, 1926; 13, 1921), as well as Bernie Williams (13, 2000).
· With his leadoff single in Saturday’s game at London Stadium, recorded the first hit in Europe in MLB history.

Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals (@maxscherzer31):
· Made two winning starts for the Nationals, compiling a 1.13 ERA. Across 16.0 innings pitched, tallied 24 strikeouts while not permitting a single walk.
· In each start, tossed 8.0 innings with at least 10 strikeouts while not allowing a free pass. Became the first pitcher in franchise history to post consecutive such starts, and the first in the Majors since fellow three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw established the MLB record with three straight starts in 2015.
· Following his pair of performances this past week, ranks third in Major League history behind Hall of Famer Randy Johnson (36) and Curt Schilling (27) with 24 career outings of 10-or-more strikeouts and zero walks.
· During his dominant month of June, went a perfect 6-0 with 68 strikeouts, five walks and a 1.00 ERA over 45.0 innings of work. Became the fourth pitcher (fifth time) since at least 1908 to log at least six wins and 68 strikeouts with a 1.00 ERA-or-better in a calendar month, joining Hall of Famers Ed Walsh (June 1911, September/October 1908), Christy Mathewson (September/October 1908) and Walter Johnson (September/October 1908). Was the first to do so with fewer than six walks.

Other noteworthy AL performances last week included outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (.440, 7 R, 5 HR, 8 RBI) of the Toronto Blue Jays; six-time All-Star designated hitter Nelson Cruz (.435, 5 XBH, 10 RBI, .913 SLG) of the Minnesota Twins; starting pitcher Shane Bieber (1-0, 1.35 ERA, 13.1 IP, 17 SO) of the Cleveland Indians; 2019 All-Star pitcher Gerrit Cole (2-0, 1.38 ERA, 13.0 IP, 13 SO) of the Houston Astros; designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (.455, 5 R, 2 2B, 3 HR) of the Los Angeles Angels; and first baseman Matt Olson (.333, 6 R, 4 HR, 7 RBI) of the Oakland Athletics.

PLAY OF THE WEEK: Home Run-Robbing Catch by JaCoby Jones of the Detroit Tigers - June 29th vs. Washington
Outfielder JaCoby Jones of the Detroit Tigers earned his first career Play of the Week honor. In the top of the third inning of Saturday afternoon’s game at Comerica Park, Jones ranged back to deep left-center field before climbing the outfield wall and robbing Victor Robles of a home run. Additional Play of the Week candidates included Harrison Bader’s diving catch in center field; Jason Heyward’s leaping catch at the wall to save a home run; the rangy Byron Buxton’s leaping grab against the outfield wall in deep right-center field; Jarrod Dyson’s well-timed jump at the wall to rob Joc Pederson of a home run; Jose Iglesias’ diving stop up the middle before spinning and firing over to first base to retire to retire 2019 All-Star Javier Báez; and Ben Gamel’s fully-extended diving catch on the warning track to prevent an extra-base hit.
