Yankees Place CC On IL; Cortes, Jr. Called Back

CC Sabathia.

On Thursday morning, the Yankees placed LHP CC Sabathia on the 10-day injured list with right knee inflammation.

This comes after Sabathia battled through five innings in a 7-5 win against the Orioles for his 249th career win, one short of a major milestone to keep building his Hall of Fame case. Earlier this season, Sabathia earned his 3,000th strikeout.

Sabathia is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA this season in eight starts. He has thrown 41-1/3 innings, allowing 19 runs (16 earned) on 35 hits and 17 walks, with 34 strikeouts.

After the win on Wednesday, Sabathia acknowledged the pain in his knee, that he would need to have it drained and get a shot for the pain, making this trip to the IL not unexpected.

Sabathia said on Wednesday night, "I'll probably take some time just to get that in there and work its magic. It was hurting pretty bad tonight but I was able to get through it and kind of keep the team in the game. These guys have been playing some great defense and scoring runs. It was good to get a win."

The Yankees improved to 31-17 and they gave Sabathia an early 4-0 lead in the second when Thairo Estrada and DJ LeMahieu each hit two-run home runs. Gleyber Torres hit two homers (solo shots in the third and 5th), and Gary Sanchez hit his 15th homer of the season, a solo homer in the fourth.

The Yankees also recalled LHP Nestor Cortes Jr. (#67) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Cortes, Jr. has made two appearances with the Yankees in relief, but could be used as a starter, which he primarily has been at Triple-A.

In 6 games, including 5 starts, with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he is 1-2 with a 4.54 ERA in 33.2 innings, allowing 17 runs (all earned), 28 hits, and 11 walks, and notching 34 strikeouts.
