Mike Piazza will always be remembered for the home run he hit when the Mets played the first game in New York City after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Baseball shut down for a week after that, and the Mets played a three-game series in Pittsburgh before returning home on September 21 to take on their rivals, the Atlanta Braves.
The Mets were trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth when Piazza hit a two-run home run to put them ahead and send Shea Stadium into a frenzy, a cathartic moment after what the city had been through.
Piazza posted this tribute on Twitter (@mikepiazza31) on Wednesday: "Always touches my heart to see the emotional messages of remembrance today. Truly grateful to all that honor us who played the first game after the attacks. A sad day however as I think of those lost and the part of our hearts that is missing. May God give you peace.#NeverForget"
