The Yankees acquired minor league third baseman Jimmy Nelson and cash considerations from the Miami Marlins for left-handed pitcher Stephen Tarpley, who at one time had a promising future.
Tarpley, 26, made 31 Major League appearances, including one start, in the 2018 and '9 seasons, going 1-0 with two saves, with a 5.88 ERA (33.2 innings pitched, 22 earned runs). He pitched so well down the stretch in the 2018 season that he made the postseason roster. In 10 appearances, he had 13 strikeouts in 9 innings pitched, and allowed just 3 runs on 6 hits.
His 2019 campaign began by winning the James P. Dawson Award as the Yankees most outstanding rookie in spring training, but that did not translate to the regular season, as he had a 6.93 ERA, allowing 20 runs (19 earned) and 34 hits in 24 2/3 innings, with 34 strikeouts and 15 walks.
Tarpley was designated for assignment on January 11.
Jimmy Nelson was selected by the Marlins in the 15th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft our of Cisco College. The 22-year-old spent the entire 2019 season with Single-A Jupiter, batting .228 (98-for-429) with 36 runs, 13 doubles, 2 triples, 4 home runs, and 36 RBI in 121 games. Over four major league seasons, the right-handed hitter has hit .259 (315-for-1,128) with 130 runs, 64 doubles, 5 triples, 14 home runs, and 147 RBI in 328 games, playing exclusively at third base.
