Callaway On Cano Being Cleared: "Big sigh of relief"

Mets second baseman Robinson Cano got hit by a pitch off his left hand in Sunday's win over the Brewers and Cano left the game in pain, creating a lot of worry that the Mets would be without their star second baseman for a while.


On Monday, Cano underwent an MRI that came back negative. That test came after an X-ray taken Sunday revealed nothing broken.

Cano said he anticipates missing only a couple of games before returning to the starting lineup. Jeff McNeil got the start at second base on Monday night against Cincinnati.

Mets Manager Mickey Callaway said on Monday afternoon of the next steps for Cano, "He'sgoing to try to grip a bat in a little bit and then we'll determine" if he can go back to playing the field or be used initially as a pinch-hitter.

Callaway said of his reaction to hearing his second baseman will not be out long, "It was a good sense of relief, big exhale. You're just happy that the kid's not down for a long period of time. Obviously, he's a big part of our lineup, big part of our defense, and you hold your breath for a minute about these kinds of things while you try to figure out what's going on and it's a big sigh of relief when you find out good news like that."

Cano has played in 26 games this season, and is hitting .270 with 3 home runs and 11 RBI, along with a .324 on-base percentage.
