The Mets entered Wednesday's game on a four-game winning streak, but the Arizona Diamondbacks had other ideas, as they jumped out to an early lead on the way to a 7-2 win on Wednesday evening at Citi Field.
David Peterson got the start for the Mets, looking to bounce back from a tough outing in San Francisco last Thursday night.
The left-hander started out on a good note by striking out Ketel Marte, but he then allowed a double up the gap to Corbin Carroll.
Geraldo Perdomo then singled, but Carroll only moved up to third base, and he would come in to score on a sacrifice fly to right field by Gabriel Moreno.
The D-Backs would keep it going in the second inning, as Ildemaro Vargas and Jose Fernandez singled before Tim Tawa bunted them over to second and third bases.
Jorge Barrosa walked to load the bases before Marte for an RBI single, and Carroll then got another double to bring in two more and open up a 4-0 lead for Arizona.
Perdomo tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly, and by this point, chants of "get him out" started to appear from the crowd.
Peterson struck out Moreno to end the frame.
Not surprisingly since he can eat up innings, Peterson came back for the third and he set down Arizona in order, and starting with the final out he got in the second, retired eight in a row before walking Perdomo with one out in the fifth.
Peterson would leave after the fifth, after he allowed five runs (all earned) on six hits and two walks, while striking out six.
Sean Manaea would relieve him, and he worked around a Vargas single to open the sixth to keep it at 5-0.
Up to that point, the Mets had only two hits against Arizona starter Ryne Nelson, but they broke through in the sixth, maybe due to the lift Manaea gave them.
Bo Bichette led off with a single, and then with one out, Luis Robert Jr. singled as well.
Brett Baty singled in Bichette to get the Mets on the board, but Nelson halted the momentum by striking out Mark Vientos, and that would be all for his day.
Ryan Thompson was first out of the Arizona bullpen, and he got Marcu Semien to fly out down the left field line to end the inning.
That was the only out the right-hander recorded, and it was a valuable one, as an inning later, Arizona put up a two-spot to open up a 7-1 lead.
