NYCFC To Face Familiar Foe In US Open Cup

It was a successful week for the local MLS teams US Open Cup's Round of 32.

New York City Football Club routed USL League One side Westchester FC, 5-2, on Tuesday night.

Talles Magno had a hat trick for NYCFC, with goals in the 24th, 31st, and 70th minutes. Agustin Ojeda scored in the 13th minute, while new addition Arnau Farnos scored in the 41st.

Red Bull New York defeated the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, of the USL Championship, 3-1, on Wednesday night.

As a result, NYCFC will travel over to Harrison, NJ, to take on the Red Bulls on Wednesday, April 29, with kickoff at 7:00 p.m. in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.

Away tickets for this match will become available tomorrow, Friday, April 17, and can be secured at www.newyorkcityfc.com/tickets/away-matches.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has been around since 1914, and it is conducted on a single-game knockout basis, open to professional and amateur teams that are affiliated with United States Soccer.

The 2026 U.S. Open Cup winner earns a spot in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. The championship team will have its name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports, and it is on permanent display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Frisco, Texas. The tournament was named after American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt in 1999.

Nashville SC of the MLS won last year's US Open Cup, as they defeated Austin FC.

NYCFC has participated in it since its inaugural season in 2015, straight up until 2023, and it has made the Quarterfinals twice. In 2024, NCYFC II participated in it, and they made the deepest run for a reserve team in the tournament, as it made the Round of 16. NYCFC's main team participated in the U.S. Open Cup last season.
