The Red Bulls won their Leagues Cup opener in thrilling fashion, as they beat Chivas Guadalajara, 1-0, on Thursday night at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

The game was played at an up-tempo style that is typical when Mexican teams come to town, and that yielded plenty of chances, but no goals.

It was still scoreless in the final moments of the six minutes of extra time in the second half when the Red Bulls advanced up the field for a final push.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was taken down just outside the box, steps short of being awarded a penalty kick, but since the Chivas defender Daniel Aguirre was called for a yellow card, the Red Bulls received a free kick.

Emil Forsberg took it from the left side of the field, and he sent a low-lying shot around the wall into the right corner of the net to give the Red Bulls a 1-0 lead in the 97th minute.

That wound up being the final play of the game, as the referees whistled it over at 97:48 as the teams were approaching midfield.

Forsberg now has 11 goals in all competitions this season, and he now has seven goal contributions in his last seven appearances. That 11 goals now ranks seventh in franchise history for most goals by a midfielder in a single season. It was his first career Leagues Cup goal. He has 21 career goals for the Red Bulls overall.

A.J. Marcucci was in net for the Red Bulls, and he earned the clean sheet, as he made four saves. Two of those came early on, one of which on a Chivas fast break and another one in which he reached up and poked it over the top of the net with his fingertips.
