NYCFC Parts Ways With Pascal Jansen

A day after a very disappointing season ended for New York City Football Club, they parted ways with Head Coach Pascal Jansen on Sunday morning.

NYCFC won at DC United, 1-0, on Saturday to finish the season with a record of 10-12-12, with 42 points, in 11th place in the MLS Eastern Conference. They were eliminated from playoff contention last weekend when they tied Montreal, 1-1, at Citi Field. It was only the third time in NYCFC's history that they missed the postseason.

This was a major letdown after Jansen led them to the Eastern Conference Finals after a fifth-place finish in the regular season.

NYCFC Sporting Director Todd Dunivant said in a statement, "We would like to thank Pascal for his commitment and contributions to New York City FC and wish him and his family all the best. This decision follows a thorough review of the season and reflects our ambition as an organization. The search for our next Head Coach begins immediately as we prepare for the 2027 Sprint Season and built toward the opening of Etihad Park."

What Dunivant is referring to is that the MLS announced earlier this year that it will be holding a 2027 Sprint Season that will be the bridge into the league's new summer-to-spring calendar.

Each MLS team will play 14 regular season games from February until April, and it will consist of intra-conference play with teams facing each of their 14 conference opponents once, with seven matches at home, and seven away.

NYCFC play home matches during the 2027 Sprint Season at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field before moving into the new Etihad Stadium in Queens for the full 2027-28 MLS season.

NYCFC CEO Brad Sims said in a statement, "We are grateful for Pascal's dedication during his time with the Club. We recognize the disappointment of missing the playoffs, and I'd like to thank our fans for their incredible support. As we look ahead for the Club next year, our commitments to consistently competing at the highest level and bringing more trophies to New York City remains unchanged."
