The St. John's Red Storm men's basketball team have spent a lot of time this off-season focusing on acquiring outside shooters, and on Wednesday, they announced that they have added a major presence in the paint.
Handje Tamba signed with St. John's after he was honored as the Appalachian Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year after his stellar season at Milligan College.
Tamba averaged 10.5 points and 8.9 rebounds (second-best in the conference) in his only season at the NAIA school in Tennessee. His 1.7 blocks per game were a Milligan school record, and he started in 30 out of their 32 games, as they went 22-10.
In addition, Tamba was a College Sports Communicators All-District Team Honoree after he finished with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) in Milligan's MBA program.
St. John's Head Coach Rick Pitino said in a statement, "Excited to have Handje Tamba join our team. He's a hard worker and terrific defensive player. I always wanted to have a Bobby Maze player. Incredible young man with an awesome work ethic."
Tamba's college career began in the 2021-22 season when he redshirted at Tennessee and was a member of the practice squad. This was after he graduated from high school early, as he graduated from the Knoxville Catholic High School in three years.
Weber State was Tamba's next stop, and he spent two years at the Big Sky Conference school. In the 2023-24 season, he appeared in 25 games, and averaged 1.8 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.
