The Mets made a major move on Friday morning, just as the season hit its halfway point, as they dismissed Manager Carlos Mendoza.
This comes after the Mets were swept by the Chicago Cubs in a four-game series, and are on a six-game losing streak, as they hit the halfway point of the season at 34-47.
It is an incredible fall from grace for Mendoza, who led the Mets to the National League Championship Series in 2024, followed by an underwhelming 83-79 record last season in which they missed the postseason, and this season, which has never been able to gain any momentum.
Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns said in a statement, "Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis. Carlos' impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward."
Mendoza was in the final year of a three-year contract, and the Mets face the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night at Citi Field.
Philadelphia dismissed their Manager, Rob Thomson, in late April, promoting Bench Coach Don Mattingly, and they have surged to a 45-36 record. There was massive speculation at the time that the Mets would have fired Mendoza then, so that remains a massive "what if" for them.
Andy Green will be the Mets' interim manager, after serving as the Senior Vice President of Baseball Development. Green played in the Major Leagues from 2004 to 2009, mostly with the Arizona Diamondbacks and with the Mets in '09. He managed the San Diego Padres from 2016 to 2019, and they had a record of 274-366 in his tenure.
