Barclays Center will be the host as Time Inc.’s Sports Illustrated and Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment will bring the annual Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year awards celebration to Brooklyn on Monday, December 12, 2016.
For the first time ever, Sports Illustrated will open the event to fans on a limited basis by offering exclusive VIP packages.
The star-studded affair will honor the 2016 SI Sportsperson of the Year winner, along with the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award recipient, the SI Kids SportsKid of the Year selection and other top names and moments from the year in sports. The evening will include a special awards dinner and ceremony with tributes to some of the world’s most legendary athletes, live musical performances and a VIP red carpet entrance featuring celebrities of sports and entertainment. Sports Illustrated is set to live stream coverage from the event on its digital platforms.

“December 12 will be the biggest, most ambitious Sportsperson event in SI's 62-year history, and we are both thrilled and honored to bring such a crown jewel event to Brooklyn and one of the premier venues in all of sports,” said Sports Illustrated Group Editorial Director Chris Stone. “It has been a historic year in sports, many times over, and we eagerly anticipate capturing the magic of 2016 by bringing together a group of figures at Barclays Center who represent the highest ideals of sport."
A limited number of VIP seats and table packages for the 2016 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year celebration can be reserved today through Quint Events by visiting quintevents.com/SportspersonVIP.
Guests in attendance will enjoy exclusive access and benefits to high-profile festivities throughout the evening, including a VIP red carpet entrance to Barclays Center, a pre-show VIP reception, drink service during the event and a VIP after party with live music.
“We are thrilled to bring the Sportsperson of the Year awards to Barclays Center and, for the first time, to provide fans with the unique opportunity to experience the event in person,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment. “It’s been an extraordinary year in sports, and there will be much to celebrate as the nation’s best athletes are recognized for their many impressive achievements.”
Presented annually since 1954, the SI Sportsperson of the Year award is bestowed upon the athlete, team or coach who transcended the year in sports by achieving the highest level of athletic excellence while demonstrating the ideals of sportsmanship.
The 2015 selection, tennis superstar and global icon Serena Williams, was honored at the Sportsperson event last December, which was also attended by her sisters and mother, actor Will Smith and legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, who was presented with the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award by Lonnie Ali.
Other attendees to the annual ceremony in recent years include former Sportsperson of the Year recipients Madison Bumgarner, Peyton Manning, LeBron James, Mike Krzyzewski, Pat Summitt, Drew Brees, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, Sugar Ray Leonard and Chris Evert, along with honorees and presenters such as Magic Johnson, Former President Bill Clinton and league commissioners Adam Silver and Rob Manfred.
The event is sponsored by Symetra. More announcements about the 2016 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year award winners and celebration will follow in the days leading up to the event. Stay up to date on the latest news at: SI.com/sportsperson.
