The Red Bulls earned a 1-1 draw against Club Deportivo Olimpia in the first leg of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League Round of 16 on Thursday at Estadio Nacional in San Jose, Costa Rica.
The Red Bulls goal came from Daniel Royer in the 31st minute on a feed from Bradley Wright-Phillips.
The sequence began when Olimpia failed to clear in their defensive third. Wright-Phillips gained possession of a loose ball and curled in a long pass into the 18-yard box. His pass was perfectly placed for a streaking Royer, who flicked the pass with his head to the far post for the 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Olimpia drew a penalty inside the box in the 73rd minute and was awarded a penalty kick. Brayan Moya took the PK and finished to the left post for the equalizer.
The Red Bulls got what they wanted as the away goal gives them tie breaker if the Leg 2 match were to end in a scoreless draw.
Royer tallied his first career CONCACAF Champions League goal. He has now tallied a goal in four different competitions, raising his all competitions total to 17.
Wright-Phillips tallied his first career CONCACAF Champions League assist. He has now tallied a goal and assist in four different competitions, raising his all competitions total to 20.
In his first match as Red Bulls captain, Luis Robles tallied one save to preserve the draw.
