A Look Back At Gleyber Torres' Yankees Debut

Gleyber Torres.

On this date one year ago, the Yankees called up their top prospect, infielder Gleyber Torres.

This was a very consequential a move made by the Yankees, who were 10-9 at the time, and he was a big part of why they went on to win 100 games in the regular season.

Below is our coverage of his debut in the Yankees' game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, April 22, 2018:

Youth Day: Yankees Win With Historic Lineup
By Jason Schott

The Yankees had a solid 5-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon to take three of four in the series.
The Yankees are now 11-9 on the season, and the surprising Toronto Blue Jays dropped to 13-8.
This was a historic day for the Yankees, as they fielded a lineup that consisted entirely of players under 30 years old for the first time since September 29, 1989 against the Detroit Tigers.
To find the last time the Yankees had a starting lineup entirely under 30 within the first 20 games of a season was May 9, 1943 against the Philadelphia Athletics. (credit: @ktsharp)
The last time they fielded a starting lineup entirely under 30 in the month of April was April 26, 1942 at the Boston Red Sox.The 10 players in today's starting lineup averaged 26 years-46 days old, their youngest average starting lineup since September 26, 1970, with an average of 25 years-35 days.
The big draw in this one was Gleyber Torres, the Yankees top prospect who was called up Sunday morning and started at second base.
Torres, who is 21 years and 130 days, is the youngest Yankees position player to make his MLB debut in the starting lineup since Melky Cabrera (20 years-330 days) on July 7, 2005 against Cleveland. He is the second youngest Yankee (after Cabrera) to start in his MLB debut since Derek Jeter (20 years- 337 days on May 29, 1995 at Seattle.
Torres is the second youngest player to appear in a MLB game this season. Ozzie Albies of Atlanta debuted in 2017 at 20 years-206 days, and is 21y-105d today).
Torres could not come up with his first MLB hit, as he went 0-for-4, but played some slick defense.
Yankees catcher Austin Romine, who at one time was the top prospect in their system, was the oldest player in the lineup, at 29 years and five months old.
Romine had the big hit in this one, as he laced a two-run double in the second inning to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead at the time.
This broke a three-game hitless streak for Romine, and it was his first hit since he went 3-for-5 on April 8 against Baltimore. He is 5-for-9 (.566) with 1 double 6 RBI, 2 walks, and a .636 on-base percentage with runners in scoring position this season.
Miguel Andujar, the rookie third baseman who is rated fourth among Yankees prospects, who is 23 years and 5 days old, went 4-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
The four hits is a career high, and he is the youngest Yankee to have four hits since Cabrera, who was 21 years-292 days, on May 30, 2006 at Detroit.
Andujar has really got it going on this homestand, as he has at least one extra-base hit in six straight games, batting .542 (13-for-24) with two home runs, seven RBI, seven runs scored, seven doubles, ans a triple in the stretch.
Shortstop Didi Gregorius, 28 years and 63 days old, launched a solo home run and has hit safely in all six games on the homestand, batting .381, or 8-for-21, with three home runs, seven RBI, six runs scored, a double, and four walks. All six of his home runs this season have come at home.
Gregorius entered Sunday with the second-highest slugging average (.714) and OPS (1.166) to Boston's Mookie Betts.
At Yankee Stadium this season, Didi is batting .410 (16-39) with 16 RBI, four doubles, 13 runs scored, 11 walks, a .538 on-base percentage, and a 1.513 OPS in 12 games at Yankee Stadium this season.
Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino, 24 years and 61 days, turned in another gem, as he allowed just one earned run on three hits, with six strikeouts and two walks. in seven innings to earn his fourth win of the season. This ties Severino (4-1) with Boston's Rick Porcello and Washington's Max Scherzer for the most wins in the major leagues.
