Baty's Surgery Successful; Marerro Gets The Call-Up

Mets rookie Brett Baty went on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 29, on Wednesday night after an MRI earlier in the day revealed a UCL tear in his right thumb. 

Baty, a third baseman and the Mets' top prospect, burst on to the scene with a bang, as he hit a home run in his first Major League at-bat on August 17 against the Atlanta Braves.

In 11 games, Baty had seven hits in 38 at-bats, with two home runs and five RBI.

The recovery time for that type of injury is five weeks, so it likely ends his regular season, but Mets Manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday night that, "there is a possibility he can make it back, the return on this has a pretty high rate. I don't know a lot of medical stuff, but if you look through the years with this injury, there's a pretty good success rate and we also think there's an outside possibility he could return this season."

Showalter said on Thursday afternoon, "Baty had his surgery today, went well" before he gave this aside, "You think doctors, they ever come out and go, 'well, I had a tough morning, wasn't very good, really wasn't into it,' you know, I've never had one come up to me and say, 'just wasn't on my game today.' I'm sure there is some of that, but they never tell us."

Baty suffered the injury on Sunday afternoon when he ran back to grab a pop-up and he jammed his right thumb into the ground.

The Baty injury went into the Mets' thinking on which two players they would be calling up when the roster expanded to 28 players on Thursday.

The Mets decided to call up infielder Deven Marrero  and outfielder veteran Terrance Gore, who actually was brought up from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday night. 

Showalter said of the reasoning on the call-ups, "(Marrero's) versatility in the infield that we needed until (Luis Guillorme) comes back. You know, (Eduardo) Escobar can play shortstop, but just felt like with Baty down and with Guillorme down, we needed that depth in the infield.

"Veteran, baseball player, trustworthy, knows his way around different positions.

"You didn't need an answer on Terrance Gore, that one was too obvious, he can really run!”

Marrero has played for the Boston Red Sox (2015-17), the Arizona Dimaondbacks in 2018, and the Miami Marlins in 2019 and '21. This season, he has appeared in three games for the Mets.

Gore has played in Kansas City (2014-17 & '19), the Chicago White Sox in 2018, and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. He has 40 career stolen bases in 120 career games. 

The Mets also called up relief pitcher Adonis Medina, and designated right-handed pitcher Connor Gray for assignment.
