New York City Football Club announced on Tuesday morning that it has "parted company" with Head Coach Nick Cushing.
This comes three days after NYCFC was eliminated from the MLS Cup Playoffs, as they lost the Eastern Conference Semifinal to the Red Bulls, 2-0, on Saturday night at Citi Field. The team finished in sixth place in the regular season.
Cushing was named the Head Coach in June 2022 when Ronny Delia moved on to Belgian club Standard Leige. This was the immediate season after NYCFC won the MLS Cup, and Cushing guided the team to a third-place finish and an Eastern Conference Finals appearance.
NYCFC Sporting Director David Lee said in a statement, "We would like to thank Nick for his incredible dedication to the Club and this city. During his time at New York City FC, Nick has been a true professional, playing an important role in delivering the Club's first MLS Cup as an assistant coach and then leading the team as Interim Head Coach to a Campeones Cup victory in 2022. After being appointed as Head Coach for the 2023 season, Nick built a collaborative, high-performance environment at the training facility that has allowed us to continue to evolve as an organization."
A member of City Football Group since 2006, Cushing made his way through the Manchester City organization. He was a coach in their Academy before he was appointed as the manager of the Manchester City's Women's Team in 2013.
