The St. John's Red Storm, on Monday, officially announced the signing of Arizona State transfer Joson Sanon, a former five-star prospect.

Sanon made a name for himself this year, as he averaged 11.9 points in 28.3 minutes per game, and he also shot 36.9 percent from 3-point range during his freshman season at Arizona State.

The real appeal to this signing is that the 19-year-old, 6-foot-5 guard still has three years of eligibility after a season in which he had 14 games in which he scored in double digits, and he led Arizona State in scoring in five games. Sanon scored at least the 20 points three times, and he shot 42.2 percent overall.

St. John’s Head Coach Rick Pitino said in a statement, “Joson is a young man with great potential. He was a five-star basketball player coming out of high school. Joson is a great shooter, really good athlete and has absolutely outstanding potential.”

Sanon is Fall River, Mass., native who appeared in 27 games, including nine starts, and he took it to another level towards the end of the season, as he put up 18.8 points per game in his last five game.

Sanon put up a season-high 28 points on March 1 in an Arizona State loss at Utah,, which was the highest scoring total by an Arizona State player since Remy Martin had 31 on Feb. 25, 2021. It was the second-most ever by an ASU freshman in a road game since Jahii Carson’s 32-point performance at Washington on Feb. 2, 2013.

One thing that will be valued at St. John's after their troubles this season on three-pointers, is how good Sanon from long-range.

Sanon shot 36.9 percent from beyond-the-arc, third best on the Sun Devils, and he buried 45 three-poitners. In a six-game span in the early part of the season, he shot 58.5 percent (20-34) on threes.

Among the 2024 class heading into college, Sanon was rated the No. 24 overall player, as well as the No. 5 shooting guard, according to 247 sports. ESPN had Sanon ranked at No. 23 in country, and the No. 6 shooting guard.

A graduate of of Vermont Academy, Sanon was the state’s No. 1 player among all major recruiting services, and he led the Wildcats to a 2024 New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC)-AAA Championship, plus and National Prep Championship appearance during his 2023-24 senior season.
