New York City Football Club announced on Thursday night that goalkeeper Matt Freese has signed a signed a contract extension through 2030.
Freese joined NYCFC in 2023, and last season he was the Club MVP and earned his first call-up to the United States Men's National Team. He has made 83 appearances for NYCFC, with an impressive 20 clean sheets, and has notched 276 saves.
One thing this will ensure is that Freese will be the goalkeeper when NYCFC moves into its new stadium in Queens in 2027, something not lost on him.
"It's an exciting step for me to sign a long-term contract with New York City FC," Freese said in a statement. "The Club has felt like my family, and the fans have taken me in and supported me so generously since the first day I joined. It's such an amazing time to play for New York City FC, from the League's growth over the last decade to the Club's investment in a beautiful new home, Etihad Park."
NYCFC Head Coach Pascal Jansen said of Freese's contract extension at his press conference on Friday, "Matt is one of our key players. He's grown so much over the period that he's been with us. I've had the pleasure of only working with him for nine months, and I've enjoyed it very much. He's a true professional - very dedicated, very open-minded, and willing to learn. His goalkeeper coach, Rob (Vartughian), is a massive influence on him and his progression, but the work [that Matt] puts in is outstanding. Obviously, he's a good goalkeeper, a good shot-stopper, and he's improving in several areas as well. It's also being recognized because he went from New York City into the National Team and got himself into the starting 11, and now is the number one goalie in the U.S. He's making a lot of progress, but one thing is for sure is he'll keep working as hard as he always does in order to become even better."
