Carnesecca Receives Naismith Award
Former St. John's Head Coach Lou Carnesecca, received his Naismith Outstanding Contributor to Basketball Award during a special on-court recognition ceremony during Saturday's Red Storm’s home game against DePaul.
The award was given to Carnesecca, a 1992 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, last month by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Carnesecca said in a statement at the time, “I would like to thank the Atlanta Tipoff Club for honoring me with its prestigious Naismith Outstanding Contributor Award. To be included in the company of so many outstanding basketball coaches, college administrators and media giants who have received this award since its inception in 1982 is a great thrill for me personally.”
Carnesecca enters an esteemed fraternity in receiving the Naismith Outstanding Contributor Award, joining the likes of basketball titans such as Dave Gavitt, Frank McGuire, Red Auerbach, John Wooden, Bob Knight, Dean Smith, and John Thompson Jr. among many, many others.
This year, the award will also be presented to Mimi Griffin, famed broadcaster and an innovator on the business side of women’s basketball.
In 24 seasons at the helm of the St. John’s men’s basketball program, “Looie” led the Johnnies 24 winning campaigns that resulted in 24 postseason appearances. His teams made the NCAA Tournament 18 times while registering six NIT appearances. Those postseason berths were highlighted by an appearance in the 1985 Final Four and the program’s fifth NIT title in 1989. His teams also recorded an additional pair of Elite Eight appearances in 1979 and 1991.
A three-time Big East Coach of the Year, Carnesecca led the Redmen to a pair of Big East titles in 1983 and 1986 while compiling a record of 112-65 in regular season conference play. Overall, Carnesecca registered a 526-200 mark in 24 seasons as the head coach at St. John’s.
