Yankees' Shutout Streak Ends

The Yankees were shutout by the Texas Rangers, 7-0, on Monday afternoon, the first time they were held scoreless in 220 games.


This was the Yankees' first shutout since June 30, 2018 vs. Boston, which was an 11-0 loss.

The 220-game run-scoring streak was the Majors’ second-longest in the Modern Era (since 1900), behind only a 308-game streak by the Yankees from August 3, 1931 through August 2, 1933, which, because they played 154 games then, was exactly two seasons long.

During the streak (7/1/18-9/1/19), there were 368 shutouts in the Majors, including 12 thrown by Yankees pitchers. 28 of the 29 other Major League teams were shut out at least seven times. Miami (26) and Detroit (21) were both blanked more than 20 times in that span. There were also four no-hitters, including the one by Houston's Justin Verlander on Sunday at Toronto.
As a team, the Yankees hit .263/.338/.474 (1,980-for-7,530) with 362 doubles, 26 triples and 392HR during the streak, while scoring 1,247 runs (5.67 runs/game)...scored at least 10 runs 29 times during the streak...had a 137-83 (.623) record in those 220 games.
Only twice during the streak were they scoreless into the ninth inning. In a 2-1 loss on July 13, 2019 vs. Toronto, DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge hit back-to-back two-out singles to score Aaron Hicks, and in a 4-1 loss on August 4, 2018 at Boston: Giancarlo Stanton and Didi Gregorius hit back-to-back doubles with two outs (Stanton's double came on a 1-2 pitch).
The only two Yankees who played in both shutouts were Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres. Of the five Yankees pitchers who pitched on 6/30/18 vs. Boston (Sonny Gray/Adam Warren/Giovany Gallegos/Jonathan Holder/Chasen Shreve), only Jonathan Holder is still in the organization, and he is on the 10-day I.L.
