The beautifully produced art and design book BY THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH looks at Morning Breath, Inc., a Brooklyn-based boutique design studio created by Jason Noto and Doug Cunningham.



Noto and Cunningham have designed album covers/art for musicians including Kanye West, Eminem, Jay-Z, Queens of the Stone Age, Slayer, the Foo Fighters, and have worked with several brands including Vans, Adidas, Reebok, Ray-Ban, and more.

The book tells their story, while showcasing the fruits of their collaborative labor, everything from artwork and designs, music packaging, t-shirts, posters. It also spotlights the artistic and creative influences that have shaped them.

It started in 1996 while Noto and Cunningham were working at the in-house design department at Think Skateboards in San Francisco, they forged a collaborative style that would transform into a remarkable partnership, an endeavor they called Morning Breath.

Working with top music artists and corporations, Morning Breath has made its aesthetic mark on pop culture, devising Grammy-nominated and award-winning work, which includes more than 100 album covers and counting. They also have done one-of-a-kind pieces of art that have been featured in shows across the country.

They are inspire by 1950s-1980s Americana, things like comics, Mad magazine, punk, hip-hop, and heavy metal, car culture, and skateboarding.

Noto and Cunningham evoke passe pop culture  art elements, with simple, limited color palettes, bold lines, and provocative design to produce fresh, original imagery that embodies their absurdist humor, antiauthoritarian sensibilities, and playful sense of wonder.

Morning Breath's work is driven by their uncompromising vision and work ethic, and is known for pushing the boundaries of design and printing to create a unique retro-modern visual style.
