The Red Sox took their third straight from the Yankees, as Nathan Eovaldi, in is second start with Boston, earned the win by throwing eight shutout innings, and only allowed three hits and a walk, with four strikeouts.
Boston took the lead in the bottom of the first when Mitch Moreland hit a two-run home run off Chance Adams, who was making his major-league debut for the Yankees.
J.D. Martinez homered in the fourth, and Sandy Leon had an RBI double in the seventh to make it 4-0.
The Yankees got a run in the ninth on a Didi Gregorius RBI double, and loaded the bases with two outs against Boston closer Craig Kimbrel, but Greg Bird flew out to end it.
1998: 80-29
August 5, 1998: Oakland 3, Yankees 1
The Yankees took the lead in the fifth inning when Tino Martinez led off the frame with a solo home run off Tom Candiotti.
Oakland responded in the bottom of the fifth when Rafael Bournigal got an RBI single, followed by A.J. Hinch (current Houston manager) getting a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.
Rickey Henderson got a solo home run in the eighth to make it 3-1.
Candiotti threw a complete game, as he only allowed that one run on four hits and two walks, with six strikeouts. His record was 7-13 at that point in 1998.
Hideki Irabu took the loss for the Yankees, as he went eight innings, and allowed three runs on two hits and two walks, with five strikeouts, to fall to 10-5 with a 3.23 ERA.
Where they stand: The 2018 Yankees (68-41) remain 12 games off the pace of the 1998 team, which was (80-29) through 109 games.
