The Mets announced on Tuesday that they will wear a memorial patch in honor of Davey Johnson, the Manager of the 1986 World Championship team, who passed away on September 5, 2025, at the age of 82.

The patch on the uniforms will simply say "Davey," in recognition of how he was universally known in the baseball world.

Johnson finished his tenure as Mets Manager with the most wins in franchise history with 595, and the best winning percentage at .588.

In 1986, Johnson led the Mets to a franchise-record 108 regular season wins, on their way to winning the World Series. In his time at the helm, from 1984 to 1990, the Mets averaged over 95 wins per season.

Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen said in a statement, "Davey was a bold manager who led with a quiet confidence and an unwavering belief in his team. He cared deeply for his players both on and off the field. Some of the greatest players in our team history credit him for their successes. In the 40th anniversary of the 1986 championship, this is a fitting tribute to the man who guided the team to that title."

Johnson's family will be involved in the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day this Thursday, when the Mets take on the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Johnson's widow, Sysan, will escort Jeremiah Allen, Davey's stepson, and Kai Casebolt, Davey's grandson, to the mound. Two key parts of the 1986 champions, and Mets Hall of Famers, Darryl Strawberry and Mookie Wilson, will be catching he first pitch.
