The MLS announced that it will be holding a 2027 Sprint Season that will be the bridge into the league's new summer-to-spring calendar.
This is a massive step for the MLS, as this will align it with the world's top soccer leagues.
Each MLS team will play 14 regular season games from February until April, and it will consist of intra-conference play with teams facing each of their 14 conference opponents once, with seven matches at home, and seven away.
New York City Football Club will play home matches during the 2027 Sprint Season at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field before moving into the new Etihad Stadium in Queens for the full 2027-28 MLS season.
Eight teams from each conference will qualify for the Audi 2027 MLS Cup Playoffs, and it will be played in a single-elimination bracket format to determine a conference champion.
The Sprint Season will culminate with the Eastern and Western Conference champions meeting for the 2027 MLS Cup in May next year.
This will also consist of international competition implications, as qualifications will be determined for the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup and 2028 Leagues Cup.
When the MLS transitions to the summer-to-spring calendar in the 2027-28 season, the league will observe a midwinter break from mid-December through early February, and will not schedule matches in January.
