Books: "The Stylist" By Rosie Nixon

The Stylist
By Rosie Nixon
William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers; paperback, $15.99; available Tuesday, September 4

Rosie Nixon, Hello! Magazine's Editor-in-Chief, is out with her debut novel, The Stylist.

Amber Green, a kooky 20-something trying to make her mark in the fashion world, navigates a Hollywood  award season after going from fashion boutique employee to assistant for the stylist to the stars.

Amber loves working at Smith's, London's ultra-exclusive boutique frequented by everyone who's anyone, including Mona Armstrong, the stylist to the stars. She is fierce, demanding and can make or break a career with a snap of her fingers.

When Mona's latest assistant walks out, with the Oscars fast approaching, Amber agrees to work for one of the most infamous and volatile women in Hollywood. The stars aren't much better to deal with, and Amber's life is turned inside out as she becomes familiar with all that Hollywood has to offer, on and off the red carpet.

As Amber begins to enjoy life in the dressing rooms of the hottest A-listers, Amber discovers she's the one in the spotlight when she catches the attention of two very different men.

As Mona's behavior grows increasingly erratic, Amber is in danger of being her latest fashion victim unless she can out style everyone in Hollywood.

Nixon has created fun, loveable, and hilarious characters, especially Amber, who is relatable and resourceful as she overcomes many obstacles and hilarious hijinks while globetrotting from London to Hollywood to Hawaii and back.

The Stylist has much in common with Stephanie Danler's coming-of-age tale Sweetbitter and Lauren Weisberger's entertaining The Devil Wears Prada, as it gives readers an in-depth look into the ins and outs of a very competitive industry, one that Nixon has been fortunate enough to observe in her time at Hello! Magazine.

Nixon recalls, "During my career, I frequently travel between London and Los Angeles to cover awards season, including the Oscars and BAFTAs, so I couldn't help but be inspired by some of the situations I have encountered along the way. I've always been fascinated by the army of people behind the amazing gowns we see paraded so seemingly effortlessly on the red carpet and thought it would be an interesting premise for a novel, with plenty of scope for humor."

The Stylist is currently in production for a major motion picture, and screenwriter Karen McCullah, who has done classics Legally Blonde and 10 Things I Hate About You, has signed on to adapt the story for film.
