The St. John's Red Storm Men's Basketball team announced on Monday the addition of guard Deivon Smith, a fifth-year senior transferring from Utah.
Smith averaged 13.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game in the 2023-24 season, his only one with the Utes, one in which he recorded five triple-doubles, the second-most in a single season in NCAA history and the most by any player in the Pac-12. His 7.1 assists per game were sixth-most in the nation.
St. John's Head Coach Rick Pitino said in a statement, "Super excited to have Deivon Smith joining the Johnnies. He reminds me of Terry Rozier. Total dog who rebounds, creates, and scores."
Smith made his mark in the NIT this past season, as he recorded two triple-doubles, the first player in the last two decades to have multiple ones in the same postseason competition. He put up 28 points, a career high, against NIT runner-up Indiana State on April 2.
Before arriving at Utah, Smith spent two seasons at Georgia Tech, where he averaged 6.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists, with 13 double-digit scoring outings. His college journey began at Mississippi State in the 2020-21 season, when he made 33 appearances as a freshman, and he led them to the NIT championship game.
