Chivas Gains 1-0 Edge On Red Bulls In Champions League Semis

The Red Bulls lost to Club Deportivo Guadalajara, 1-0, in the first leg of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Semifinals on Wednesday night at Estadio Akron.

Leg Two  will be on Tuesday, April 10 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET with coverage on Univision Deportes, go90.com and Red Bulls Radio in English on TuneIN.

Chivas got the winning goal in the 26th minute when Isaac Brizuela scored on a feed from Rodolfo Pizarro.

The play began when Pizarro intercepted a pass by the Red Bulls' Tyler Adams in the midfield.

Red Bulls Head Coach Jesse Marsch defended Adams, saying in the postgame, "Tyler is a great player and has a great future ahead of him and it's normal that young players make little mistakes, but for the most part he was a very important player for us tonight and will continue to be a very important player for us this year.

"When you coach young players, you have to have patience at times. You have to understand that they're not going to make every decision perfectly, they're not going to make every play perfectly.

"But Tyler is a big player for us and I guarantee you that he'll respond in the second leg in a big way."

This was a tough one for the Red Bulls, as Alex Muyl took a yellow card for arguing with the referee in the 21st minute, and Aurelien Collin took a pair of yellow cards, in the 44th and 73rd minutes.

Collin was ejected because of the two yellows, leaving the Red Bulls a man short for the final 20 minutes.

Both Muyl and Collin will be out for Leg Two against Chivas due to yellow card accumulation.

Chivas' Jair Pereira (43rd minute) and Rodolfo Pizarro (83rd minute) took yellow cards.

The Red Bulls implemented its ninth different starting XI of the season, and were held scoreless for the first time in the tournament. The Red Bulls had scored at least one goal through the first four matches of SCCL play.

The Red Bulls were dealt their first loss of the SCCL tournament, having held a 3-0-1 mark prior to the match. New York and Toronto were the only two teams left in the tournament without a loss prior to tonight's game.

With a 1-0 deficit heading into Leg Two on Tuesday night, the Red Bulls will need to defeat Guadalajara by at least one goal to advance or a 1-0 score line to force penalty kicks.

If Chivas gets at least one goal on Tuesday night, the Red Bulls would need to win by two goals to advance. If the final is 2-1 Red Bulls, for example, Chivas would advance on the road-goal tiebreaker. If Chivas scores, penalty kicks are not possible.

Marsch is confident of their chances going into the second leg, "If you were to follow our team over the years at Red Bull Arena our record is very good, our goal differential is very good.

"It's a place we love to play. We know there'll be a lot of Chivas fans there. Obviously we would've liked to get a road goal, but this is halftime."

The second half of the semifinals commences Tuesday at 8 pm at Red Bull Arena.
