Manchester City has won the English Premier League Championship for the third time in seven years following what has been a record-breaking season.

City clinched the title with a 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night which put them 16 points ahead of second place Manchester United, who suffered an embarrassing loss at Old Trafford to West Bromwich Albion, who are in last place in the Premier League and likely to be relegated.

The amazing thing is that Manchester City was able to win at Wembley after suffering a crushing defeat to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, and getting stung at home by Manchester United last Saturday, April 7, when they coughed up a 2-0 halftime lead and lost 3-2.

Manchester City clinched the title with five games remaining in the season, which equaled Manchester United’s record for the earliest title win in Premier League history, which United did in the 2000-01 season.

Manchester City led from the beginning, and started what would be a streak 18 consecutive Premier League wins, the most any club has achieved.

The run that began away to Bournemouth on August 26 and ended four months later with a 1-0 win at Newcastle United on December 27. The streak ended when they had a scoreless draw on December 31 at Crystal Palace.

Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola, in his second season with the club, continued to build on his record as one of the best in the world when he became the first manager to win the Premier League Manager of the Month for four successive months.

Vincent Kompany, Manchester City Captain, said of the EPL title, “It’s the same feeling as the first time and you can’t describe it. It’s amazing, such a difficult achievement and I’m proud of the team and everyone involved. This one differs in that we were consistent the whole season and we were able to play at the level we’re expected to perform at.

“I’m buzzing, over the moon, so happy. I’m proud to be able to share this with all our fans, everybody who’s been there to support us.”

Ferran Soriano, Chief Executive Officer, Manchester City, said, “Winning the Premier League again is a great honour for Manchester City. We are delighted to have done so providing our supporters with some very exciting and unforgettable moments. We are committed to playing beautiful football and we are proud to have done it so brilliantly this season. For all Manchester City supporters, at home and globally, it is time to celebrate, acknowledge our friendship and enjoy our passion together.”

With five games remaining, Manchester City could still set more records before the end of the season on May 13th. If achieved, these would include most wins, most points and most goals in any given season, which could also mean the greatest goal difference ever achieved in a Premier League competition.

A roundup of some of Manchester City's  2017-18 season record-setting numbers:

• City equalled the record of 11 away victories in a row when they beat Newcastle in November.
• City's possession figure of 82.13% in their game against Everton on March 31 is the highest maintained by an away team in a single Premier League game.
• Manchester City only need two more victories from the remaining five games to equal Chelsea’s record of 30 Premier League wins in a season.
• Manchester City are on course to set a new goal difference record before the end of the season. With a current figure of +68, Chelsea’s +71 is only three away.
• Manchester City have scored 93 goals so far this season, they need to score 11 more to beat Chelsea’s record of 103 goals in a single Premier League season.
• City completed 902 passes against Chelsea in their 1-0 win on March 4 to accomplish another historic achievement.
• If Manchester City secure another 8 points from a possible 15 in their remaining five games they will equal Chelsea’s record of 95 points in one season, three wins mean another City milestone.
• Midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is poised to top the Premier League assists list, with teammates Leroy SanĂ© and David Silva his closest competition.
• Defender Nicolas Otamendi is on track to be the player with the most passes this season.
• Goalkeeper Ederson is just one clean sheet behind Manchester United's David De Gea in the race for the Golden Glove
