The team was recently runners up to the 2018 Liga Aguila Apertura tournament where it lost to Deportes Tolima in a penalty shoot-out. Atletico Nacional is one of the most successful Colombian clubs, having won the league 16 times, three Copa Colombia titles, and two SuperLiga Colombiana championships. Internationally, Nacional has won seven international trophies, including two Copa Libertadores crowns. Former New York Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel began his career at Nacional, helping them win a championship in 1994.

America de Cali, also known as Los Diablos Rojos, is one of the most successful soccer clubs in Colombia, having won 13 national championships since 1927. Internationally, they were the runner-up of the Copa Libertadores for three consecutive years, from 1985 to 1987, and again in 1996. In 2011, América was relegated to the local second division, and played for five seasons before achieving promotion back to the Categoria Primera A in 2016.
