Detroit got a good outing from starter Mike Fiers, who went 5 2/3 allowing two runs on six hits and two walks, with six strikeouts, to improve to 5-3 on the season.
The Yankees' offense was limited to a Brett Gardner RBI triple in the third inning and a Giancarlo Stanton monster home run in the sixth.
That was a measure of revenge for Stanton, who was hit in the face by Fiers when Stanton was with Miami and Fiers was in Milwaukee.
Domingo German took the loss for the Yankees, as he allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks, with three K's in 6 2/3 innings, to drop to 0-4 on the season.

The Yankees jumped out to a 4-0 lead in this one in the third inning when Luis Sojo had an RBI single, followed by a three-run homer from Bernie Williams.
Ramiro Mendoza went 7 1/3 innings in this one, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks, with a strikeout, to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Where they stand: The 2018 Yankees (38-18) are now five games off the pace of the 1998 team, which was 43-13 through 56 games.
