St. John's junior point guard Shamorie Ponds has earned the latest in a long line of national recognitions this season, earning a spot on the midseason team for the Citizen Naismith Trophy, it was announced Wednesday morning.

Ponds, the third leading scorer in the Big East at 20.5 points per game, is one of 30 players nationwide to find himself still in the running for one of college basketball’s most prestigious individual award.
The list will shrink to 10 semifinalists on March 4 before four finalists are announced on March 19. The award recognizing the top player in college basketball will then be presented at the Final Four on April 7.
Ponds is one of four Big East players to earn a spot on the midseason team, joining Markus Howard of Marquette and the Villanova tandem of Phil Booth and Eric Paschall.
In addition to ranking third in the league in scoring, Ponds also leads the conference in assists (5.3 apg) and steals (2.8 spg) while placing second in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.4-to-1. His 14-point, seven rebounds, four steal, three assist outing last night in the team’s overtime win over Butler snapped a streak of nine consecutive Big East appearances with 20 or more points.
Ponds currently ranks 10th on the St. John’s all-time scoring list with 1,711 points.
