GAME 2: Torres Trounces Orioles As Yanks Sweep Twinbill

Gleyber Torres dominated the Baltimore Orioles all season, and the second game of Monday's doubleheader was no exception as he hit two home runs in the Yankees' 11-8 win.


The Yankees are now 15-2 against the Orioles this season and improved to 79-41. They have now swept five of their six doubleheaders this season, with the only split coming against the Mets.

Torres hit back-to-back three run home runs in the fifth and sixth innings that gave the Yankees an 11-3 lead. He also had a solo home run in the Yankees' 8-5 Game 1 victory.

Torres now has 13 home runs and 20 RBI against the Orioles this season.

Yankees Manager Aaron Boone said Torres' big day at the plate was "really good," adding, "Obviously missing a couple days with the injury (last week in Baltimore), then getting him back in Toronto, and thought he had a couple at-bats over there in that last day that, you know, kind of just missed, and then, you know, really clinched the first one in the day game, and then, obviously, two really good ones and, being three-run homers, needed it. Great day for Gleyber and, hopefully, really getting him back in the flow."

On the fact that half of Torres' 26 home runs this season have come against Baltimore, Boone said, "Anytime you have that kind of a year against a team, yeah, I mean, it's crazy. I think guys, typically, you know, have success against one team for whatever reason. Gleyber has, obviously, had a lot of success against them."

The Yankees got on the board in the bottom of the first when Brett Gardner hit a three-run triple up the gap in left-center field to make it 3-0. 

They went up 4-0 i  the second inning when Breyvic Valera scored on a throwing error.

Chad Green got the start for the Yankees, an "opener" as he lasted just an inning-and-a-third.
Joe Mantiply, whom the Yankees acquired from Cincinnati on Friday, was first out of the bullpen and he got through the second with ease, but ran into trouble in the third.

Hanser Alberto opened that inning with a triple, and then Jonathan Villar got a two-out single before Trey Mancini launched a three-run homer that made it 4-3 Yankees.

Mike Ford got one of those runs back when he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, the fourth of the year for the first baseman.

Mantiply lasted into the fifth, and his final line was: 3 innings, 3 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 2 walks, two strikeouts. He earned the victory.

Brady Lail was next on for the Yankees, and he was making his Major League debut, and he closed out the fifth by getting Villar to hit into a double play.

Lail retired the O's in order in the sixth before running into trouble in the seventh when he allowed a three-run homer to Alberto that cut the Yankees' lead to 11-6.

The Yankees had two on base with two out in the eighth inning with Torres coming up with a chance at another three-run homer, but the Orioles elected to intentionally walk him and load the bases for Gardner, who grounded out to end it.

The Orioles made it interesting in the ninth when they scored a pair against Nestor Cortes, Jr., but Adam Ottavino came on to close it out and earned his second save of the season.
