The Yankees completed their sweep of the Boston Red Sox with a 7-4 win on Sunday night at Yankee Stadium.
This came after Boston took three out of four at Fenway a weekend ago and actually showed signs of getting into the American League East race by cutting the Yankees' lead down to eight games.
A week later, the Yankees now lead Boston by 14 1/2 games since they have won five straight and the Red Sox are now on an eight-game losing streak. Tampa Bay is in second place in the division, and they blew by Boston by sweeping them at Fenway during the week.
This was the Yankees' first four-game sweep over Boston in ten years, nearly to the day, August 6-9, 2009 at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees totally dominated the Sox at home, going 8-1 against them, their most wins over the Red Sox ever at the current Yankee Stadium. They matched their most home wins over Boston since 1962 (were also 8-1 in 2001).
This is part of a larger trend as they are 25-11 at home vs. Boston in the last four seasons and have won seven consecutive regular season home series over the Red Sox (since 8/31/17). Boston did win two games in the ALDS last October at Yankee Stadium and clinched the AL East there last season.
They have won nine consecutive home series vs. AL East opponents, going 23-4 since 4/16; have swept five of the nine series, and are 38-14 (.731) vs. the AL East in 2019, including 27-10 since 5/19.
The Yankees are now 72-39, and are a season-high 33 games over .500. The 111 games needed to reach this plateau are their second-fewest needed to get there over the last 58 seasons (since 1962), since they went 46-13 in 1998.
The Yankees have been nearly unbeatable at Yankee Stadium this season, with a record of 43-18 (.705) at home, including 21-5 since June 17.
On Sunday night, the Yankees took over the game when they scored six runs in the third on six consecutive two-out hits off Red Sox starter David Price - a Gio Urshela two-run home run, a Brett Gardner double, a Cameron Maybin double to score Gardner, a Mike Ford single to score Maybin, a Kyle Higashioka double, a Mike Tauchman single that scored Ford and Higashioka to make it 7-0 Yankees.
The Yankees continued their domination of Price, as they went 9-for-17 with 4 doubles, 2HR and 2BB against him. Since he joined the Red Sox in 2016, the Yankees are hitting .379/.428/.718 (67-for-177) with 12 doubles and 16HR against him at Yankee Stadium (eight starts).
In a weekend marked by big knockout innings by the Yankees, they also scored seven two-out runs against Chris Sale in the fourth inning in Saturday’s 9-2 Game 1 win. That sequence went: Higashioka single to load the bases, Breyvic Valera two-run single, Gardner two-run single, DJ LeMahieu three-run home run, Aaron Judge ground-rule double, and Edwin Encarnacion RBI single that made it 8-1.
On Friday night, after Boston jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a J.D. Martinez two-run homer in the top of the first, Gleyber Torres responded in the bottom half with a grand slam. That made it 4-2, and that wound up being the final, as it was all James Paxton and the Yankees relief corps needed.
The Bronx Bombers hit .419 (31-for-74) with 7 doubles, 6HR and a 1.239 OPS vs. Red Sox starting pitchers in this series.
The Yankees have hit multiple home runs in three straight and nine of their last 14 games.
