Mets' Lugo, Yankees' Kahnle Relievers Of The Month

It was a good month to be a reliever in New York in July, as Seth Lugo of the Mets has been named the National League Reliever of the Month, and Tommy Kahnle of the Yankees has been voted the American League Reliever of the Month.



Lugo was awarded his first career Reliever of the Month Award, and joined Billy Wagner (July 2007) as the only Mets winners since Reliever of the Month began in 2005. Kahnle also claimed his first career monthly honor, and is the third different Yankees winner (fifth time) since 2005, joinng his All-Star bullpen-mate Aroldis Chapman (September 2017 & May 2019) and Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera (April 2008 & July 2009).

• Made 12 scoreless appearances for the Mets, logging a save and one victory. Tallied 16 strikeouts while permitting just three hits and one walk across 12.2 innings pitched.
• Notched at least one strikeout in 10 straight appearances from July 5th-28th, including six multi-strikeout performances.
• Collected his first save of the 2019 campaign on July 26th, his first since September 26th of last season.
• Became the second pitcher in franchise history to post a month in which he logged at least 12.0
scoreless innings while tallying 16-or-more strikeouts, joining Addison Reed (July 2016).
• With 69 strikeouts over 52.2 innings of work thus far, is on pace to become the fourth reliever (fifth time) in franchise history to record a SO/9.0 IP ratio of 11.0-or-better (11.79) with at least 50.0 innings pitched, joining Wagner (2006), Armando Benitez (1999-2000) and Randy Myers (1987).

Tommy Kahnle, New York Yankees:

• Made 12 appearances for the Yankees, logging a 0.77 ERA and 17 strikeouts. Surrendered one run during his impressive month on five hits and two walks. Did not permit a home run.
• Posted an 11-game scoreless streak from June 30th-July 27th, matching his season-best set earlier this year from April 14th-May 5th.
• Over the course of his dominant month, notched at least one strikeout in all but one appearance, including five multi-strikeout outings.
• Logged a six-game streak from July 14th-27th in which he tallied at least one strikeout without
permitting a hit, tied for the seventh-longest such streak by a reliever in franchise history. Established the Club record for such a streak earlier this season during his aforementioned stretch from April 14th-May 5th.

The National League Reliever of the Month presented by The Hartford, Seth Lugo, and the American League Reliever of the Month presented by The Hartford, Tommy Kahnle, will each receive a specially designed plaque, suitably engraved, for their accomplishments. The Hartford, the Official Business Insurance & Employee Benefits Sponsor of MLB, has presented baseball’s annual Relievers of the Year Awards since 2015. The Hartford Presents the 2019 Relievers of the Year, named in honor of Mariano Rivera (American League) and Trevor Hoffman (National League), will again be presented during the World Series.
