Mets, Braves To Partake In Players' Weekend

When the Mets meet the Atlanta Braves in a pivotal three-game series this weekend at Citi Field, each team will be sporting uniforms never seen before in Major League Baseball.
In honor of Players' Weekend, the Mets will be wearing all white, while the Braves will be in all black, and that includes the pants as well.

These uniforms are similar to what the NFL has done with their Color Rush schemes or special NBA Christmas Day uniforms.

They are quite a contrast to the first two incarnations of Players' Weekend, when the teams wore two-tone uniforms. For example, the Mets had a blue jersey with orange sleeves.

The players will also have their nicknames on the back of their jerseys, such as Mets first baseman Pete Alonso will have "Polar Bear" above his number 20.

On Friday afternoon, Mets Manager Mickey Callaway strode into his pregame press conference in the solid white cap and pants (with his usual Mets pullover) looking like he was just hanging out with New Kids on the Block.

"I think it's neat that the players get recognition," Callaway said of the special threads. "This is about the fans first, and then the players, and I think it's cool that they get their nicknames and they kind of recognize the players this weekend."

This is not the first time the Mets have worn a white cap, as they introduced one in 1997 with the "NY" in blue surrounded by orange trim and a blue brim. They debuted along with the solid "Snow white" (as they were called) home uniforms. While the cap lasted just one season, that Mets uniform lasted until 2014.
