On Wednesday, the Yankees made some massive roster moves, with two of them about players they just acquired at the trade deadline.
Third baseman Jazz Chisholm was put on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 13, with a sprained left elbow, and they designated pitcher Enyel de Los Santos for assignment.
Chisholm hurt himself sliding headfirst into the plate during Monday night's 12-2 loss to the White Sox, which massively hurts the Yankees with how he has hit and taken over at third baseman, a position he never played before.
In 14 games with the Yankees since they acquired him from the Miami Marlins on July 27, Chisholm has hit .316, with seven home runs and 11 RBI, plus a .361 on-base percentage.
De Los Santos, whom the Yankees brought in from San Diego on July 30, was not nearly as heralded, as he had a 1-2 record and 5.38 ERA (earned run average) with the Padres.
In his five appearances with the Yankees, he had a 14.21 ERA, and did not have one clean outing in pinstripes, allowing a hit each time he took the mound.
De Los Santos also allowed runs in three appearances, and Monday night obviously was the last straw. He entered Monday night's game with the Yankees trailing the 28-91 White Sox 5-2 in the seventh inning, still an eminently winnable game.
By the time he left, Chicago was up 12-2, as he surrendered seven runs (all earned) on eight hits and no walks, with a strikeout, in 1 2/3 innings.
This means that the only other player the Yankees acquired at the deadline, reliever Mark Leiter Jr., is the only player left on the roster, when the Yankees needed so much more help in the starting rotation, bullpen across the board, and in the starting lineup.
The corresponding moves the Yankees made were bringing up infielder Oswald Peraza and right-handed pitcher Will Warren.
