Gavitt Tipoff Games Include SJU-Rutgers & Seton Hall-Nebraska

St. John's Head Coach Chris Mullin.

The Big East and Big Ten Conferences released the 2018 lineup for the Gavitt Tipoff Games on Tuesday.

St. John's will be taking on Rutgers on Friday, November 16 in Piscataway, N.J., while Seton Hall will be taking on Nebraska on Wednesday, November 14.

The unique eight-game event is named in honor of Dave Gavitt, who had a profound and lasting influence on the sport of basketball on the collegiate, professional and international levels. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

This year’s slate of games running from Nov. 13-16 also includes Georgetown at Illinois, Wisconsin at Xavier, Michigan at Villanova, Marquette at Indiana, Ohio State at Creighton, and Penn State at DePaul.

Scheduled to take place through 2022, the Gavitt Tipoff Games are played on four-consecutive days in the first full week of the college basketball campaign. The series spans eight years, with games played at home sites. Each Big East team will participate a minimum of six times, while Big Ten programs will take part a minimum of four times.

St. John's and Rutgers, who used to be in the Big East together, last squared off in 2015 for the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games. St. John’s rallied back from a 16-point second half deficit to upend Rutgers, 61-59, at Carnesecca Arena.

This will be St. John's first trip to The RAC during the regular-season since downing the Scarlet Knights, 72-60, on Jan. 23, 2013.

St. John’s owns a 27-14 all-time record against Rutgers in a series that dates back to 1974. The Johnnies have won the past two meetings and seven of their last 10 contests with the Scarlet Knights.
