Steinbrenner Family, Yankees Honored For Support Of Amateur Football
The NYC Chapter of the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame held their Elite Eleven Dinner on Tuesday night at the New York Athletic Club.
The 2018 Founder Award Winner went to the George M. Steinbrenner Family and the New York Yankees for their many contributions to amateur football in New York City.
National Football Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Hatchell was on hand to present the award.
The Steinbrenners' involvement with football started with George's love for the game. In college, he played halfback at Williams College.
George Steinbrenner was a graduate assistant coach at Ohio State University working for legendary coach Woody Hayes while earning his master's degree in physical education. The Buckeyes won the Rose Bowl that season and finished the season as undefeated National Champions.
Steinbrenner then was an assistant football coach at Northwestern University in 1955 and at PerdueUniversity in 1956 and 1957 before leaving to work in the family's shipping business.
A longtime friend of the NFF, Steinbrenner endowed two NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards in honor of the legendary Grambling Coach Eddie Robinson and his longtime friend Lou Saban, whom he coached for at Northwestern.
In 2002, the NFF presented Steinbrenner with its Gold Medal, the organization's highest honor.
Currently, the Yankees are strong supporters of PSAL football and the PSAL overall, and have hosted the football and baseball championship games at Yankee Stadium in recent years.
The Yankees have always demonstrated their commitment to community-based organizations that provide positive educational outlets for New York City youth.
