Yankees 1998 Tracker: Game 48

From now until the end of the season, we will be tracking the progress of the current Yankees with the 1998 World Championship team which won 114 games in the regular season.

2018: 32-16
Saturday night: Angels 11, Yankees 4
The Angels got the lead in the top of the first on a Mike Trout RBI double, but in the bottom half of the frame, Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge had back-to-back home runs to make it 2-1 Yankees.
In the second, Austin Romine hit a two-run shot off the right-field foul pole to make it 4-1.
The Angels got to Yankees starter Sonny Gray in the third, as he walked in a run and Andrelton Simmons had a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3 Yanks, and in the fourth, Trout hit a two-run shot to give the Angels a 5-4 lead.
The Angels blew it open in the sixth when Trout had another RBI double, followed by a two-run single from Albert Pujols, and a Shohei Ohtani RBI groundout to make it 9-4.

1998: 37-11
May 29, 1998: Yankees 6, Red Sox 2
Boston jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Reggie  Jefferson solo home run in the top of the first inning against David Cone, but it wasn't long before the Yankees got to Boston starter Derek Lowe.
The Yankees got on the board in the third when Chuck Knoblauch had an RBI single, followed by two runs coming in on a Paul O'Neill RBI single to make it 3-1.
In the fourth, the Yankees got three more, as Joe Girardi had a two-run single, followed by another RBI single from Knoblauch to make it 6-1.
Cone went seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk, with seven strikeouts, to improve to 7-1 on the season.
Lowe went just 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks, with just one strikeout, to drop to 0-4 in 1998.

Where they stand: The 2018 Yankees (32-16), with the loss to the Angels, lost a game on the pace, and now trail their 1998 counterparts, who were 37-11 through 48 games, by five in the race for 114 wins.
