On Friday afternoon, St. John's point guard Shamorie Ponds has been selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List presented by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).

Ponds, one of just 20 players nationwide to receive the accolade, was the Big East Preseason Player of the Year and a 2017 First Team All-Big East pick.
Through 11 games, Ponds leads the team and ranks third in the Big East with 20.2 points per contests. The Brooklyn native also tops the league in a number of other categories, dishing out 5.8 assists and swiping 2.5 steals per outing. Excelling especially at ball protection so far as a junior, Ponds paces the Big East in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.5-to-1.
Ponds has led the Red Storm to its best start in 36 years. St. John's, one of eight undefeated teams remaining in Division I, has won 11-straight to kick off a campaign for the first time since 1982-83, when Chris Mullin anchored the Johnnies to 14-straight victories en route to the program's first Big East title.
Ponds has pieced together more than his fair share of sensational performances so far this season, cracking the 30-point plateau on three occasions with six outings of 20 points or more. Not only a prolific scorer, Ponds has also established a reputation as a premier ball distributor, highlighted by a 14-assist, one-turnover effort against Wagner on Dec. 16. His 14 helpers tied for the fourth-highest single game total in program history and were the most by a St. John’s player since 2001.
Ponds and the Red Storm host Sacred Heart on Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
