Yankees 1998 Tracker: Game 83

From now until the end of the season, we will be tracking the progress of the Yankees with their 1998 World Championship team, which won 114 games in the regular season.

Through 83 Games:


2018: 55-28
Tuesday night: Yankees 8, Braves 5

The Yankees jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first four innings, partly from the strength of a two-run home run from Aaron Hicks in the first, and a solo shot from Kyle Higashioka in the second.
Atlanta responded with three in the fifth, as Ender Inciarte hit a two-run blast, followed by a solo shot from Ozzie Albies. In the seventh, Nick Markakis hit a two-run shot to cut it to 6-5.
Giancarlo Stanton put the game away in the eighth when he hit a two-run shot into the right-field corner that made it 8-5.
A.J. Cole, who was called up last night, earned the win as he went 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Domingo German, allowing just one hit and no walks, while striking out four Cole is now 2-0 on the season.
Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect night, which included two K's, to earn his 23rd save of the season.

1998: 63-20
July 10, 1998: Yankees 8, Tampa Bay 4

This was the Yankees eighth straight victory, and they did it with a comeback
Tampa Bay jumped out to an early lead against Yankee starter Hideki Irabu.
In the second, Miguel Cairo (who would later play for the Yankees) got an RBI groundout; in the third, Fred McGriff hit a solo homer, and went up 3-0  in the fourth  when Dave Martinez hit an inside-the park home run.
The Yankees tied it in the fifth when Chuck Knoblauch hit a three-run homer, and then got a pair of runs in sixth to take a 5-3 lead.
Scott Brosius hit a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to make it 8-4 Yankees and put the game away.
Irabu settled down, and allowed just those three runs on seven hits and four walks, with five strikeouts, to earn the win and improve to 7-3 on the season.
Ramiro Mendoza pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings to earn his first save of the season.

Where they stand: With the win Tuesday, the 2018 Yankees (55-28) remain eight games off the pace of the 1198 team, which was 63-20 through 83 games.
