Yankees 1998 Tracker: Game 85

Tino Martinez.

From now until the end of the season, we will be tracking the progress of the Yankees with their 1998 World Championship team which won 114 games in the regular season.

Through 85 Games:

2018: 56-29
Friday night: Blue Jays 6, Yankees 2

The Blue Jays got to Yankees starter Sonny Gray in the second inning, as Devon Travis and Curtis Granderson each had RBI singled, followed by a three-run homer from Justin Smoak to make it 5-0.
Gray was pulled after just two innings, his second straight dismal outing, as he allowed five runs on six hits and two walks, with four strikeouts, to fall to 5-7 with a 5.85  ERA.
That was basically all Toronto needed, as the Yankees only got a pair of runs courtesy of Aaron Hicks, who hit a solo homer in the third and walked with the bases loaded in the fifth.

1998: 65-20
July 12, 1998: Yankees 9, Tampa Bay 2

This was the Yankees' 10th straight victory and it completed a four-game sweep of Tampa Bay.
The Yankees and Devil Rays were tied at two heading into the ninth inning, when the Yankees rallied against Roberto Hernandez.
Chuck Knoblauch was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by a two-run single by Derek Jeter to make it 5-2, which was all for Hernandez.
With Scott Aldred in for Tampa Bay, Tino Martinez ripped a three-run double, and he scored on a Jorge Posada single to make it 9-2.
David Wells started this one for the Yankees, as he went five innings, allowing a run on four hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.
Mike Stanton, who came on to get the final out of the eighth and stayed on for the ninth, earned the win to improve to 4-0 in 1998.

Where they stand: The 2018 Yankees fell to 56-29 on Friday night and are now nine games off the pace of the 1998 Yankees, who were 65-20 through 85 games.
