Yankees 1998 Tracker: Game 42

From now until the end of the season, we will be tracking the progress of the current 2022 Yankees team against the 1998 World Championship team that won 114 games in the regular season.

Game 42

2022: 29-13

Monday night: Orioles 6, Yankees 4

The Orioles beat the Yankees on Monday night at The Stadium, as Jordan Lyles got the win, going 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks, with eight strikeouts, to improve to 3-4 on the season.

Lyles outmatched Yankees starter Gerrit Cole, who went eight innings, but allowed five runs on seven hits and no walks, with 11 strikeouts, to fall to 4-1 on the season.

The Yankees jumped out to an early lead on an Aaron Judge solo home run in the first inning, and a Jose Trvino RBI single in the second. Baltimore responded with four runs in the third inning, including on an RBI double from Robinson Chirinos and an Austin Hays RBI single, to take a 4-2 lead at the time.

The Yankees tied it at 4 in the fifth when Judge hit another dinger, a two-run shot, his league-leading 17th of the season.

Baltimore got the lead right back in the sixth when Ramon Urias hit a solo homer to make it 5-4, and then Chirinos gave them an insurance run in the ninth against Yankee reliever Wandy Peralta, when he hit a sacrifice fly that scored Rougned Odor, who singled to open the inning.

1998: 32-10

May 23, 1998: Yankees 12, Red Sox 3

David Wells earned the win in this one, the first start after his perfect game on May 17, 1998 against Minnesota.

Wells went seven innings, and allowed three runs on five hits and a walk, with five strikeouts, to improve to 6-1 at the time.

The Yankees gave him a nice lead to work with early, as they got to Boston starter Derek Lowe in the second inning. Chad Curtis had an RBi single, followed by a Chuck Knoblauch grand slam to make it 5-0.

That grand slam chased Lowe from the game, and they kept it going against John Wasdin.

Scott Brosius had a two-run double in the top of the third, followed by a Jorge Posada RBI groundout in the fourth to make it 8-0 Yankees.

Darryl Strawberry had a pair of RBI doubles later in the game, as he had one in the seventh that scored Derek Jeter to make it 11-3, and another in the ninth to make it 12-3.

Where they stand: The 2022 Yankees (29-13) are three games off the pace of the 1998 team, which was 32-10 through 42 games.
