Boone: Andujar Decision Coming Soon

On Monday evening, the Yankees made the announcement that infielder Miguel Andújar would be going back on the 10-day injured list with a right labrum tear a little more than a week after he returned from a lengthy IL stint.

Andujar was originally placed on the injured list on April 1, and at that time, the Yankees preached caution when it came to his rehab, but that surgery was an option.

When he returned on May 4, that shoulder was still not 100 percent, but he could hit close to normal.
With so many injuries, the chance to restore last year's American League Rookie of the Year runner-up was too enticing.

Primarily used as a designated hitter, Andujar has been 3-for-34 in nine games since his return. Overall this season, he is hitting .128 (6-47) with no home runs and 1 RBI in 12 games (he played the opening weekend against Baltimore, and hurt himself in their game on March 31).

Yankees Manager Aaron Boone gave an update on Tuesday afternoon in his pregame press conference: "He had another MRI just to see where he's at with it. Basically, the MRI was about identical (to early April). The small labrum tear still there, hasn't changed at all, rest of the shoulder is pretty good and stable, so I think over the next 24 hours, you know, he's going to have those conversations with his family, with us, and figure out what the best course of action, whether it's to go down the road with surgery or whether it's to continue to rehab it. These will be the decisions probably made over the next 24 hours."

Boone said of whether a PRP injection into Andujar's shoulder is an option, "I don't think that's on the table, no."

Boone then was asked what a blow it would be to his team if Andujar opts for surgery and if it means his season would likely be over, and he said, "Yeah, probably, I mean, Miggy's a really good player. Obviously, this year, the struggles, I'm sure a lot of it's related to the shoulder. Yeah, that's taking a good player out of the mix, it's a blow. We certainly feel like we can absorb it, obviously Gio (Urshela) stepped up in a huge way for us (.341 batting average, 2 HR, 15 RBI), but to lose Miguel Andujar and his production would be a blow that'd we'd have to deal with."

On if he is resigning himself to that thought now, Boone said, "Not yet. Out of respect to Miggy, I just want him to really be able to work through this and talk to his family and people close to him and then, you know, I just want him to feel good about whatever decision he makes because he'll be a big part of that decision obviously."
