Yankees Get Green Back In Bullpen

The Yankees recalled reliever Chad Green from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday morning.


Green, a key part of the Yankee bullpen, was sent down on April 24 after he gave up a grand slam in the eighth inning to Justin Bour of the Angeles in a 7-5 Yankees win the night beford that raised his ERA to 16.43.

This came two days after Green came on in the eighth inning with the Yankees up 5-0 on Sunday against the Royals at Yankee Stadium, and allowed two hits and a walk without recording an out. This sparked a six-run inning for the Royals. The Yankees came back to win, 7-6, in 10 innings.

In 10 games with the Yankees this season, Green has allowed 14 earned runs and 15 hits, including four home runs, and four walks, with seven strikeouts.

Green was used as a starter with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so he could control the situation. In three outings, he threw 7-1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs (both earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks, with 14 strikeouts.

The fact he racked up practically two strikeouts per inning shows he has rejuvenated himself, and possibly could be used as an "opener" if they need it. 

Green does have experience as a starter for the Yankees, as he started eight games in 2016.

On Saturday night, the Yankees sent down left-hander Nestor Cortes, Jr. He was called up on Thursday and pitched in Saturday night's 7-2 loss to Tampa Bay in which he threw two innings, but allowed 3 runs (all earned) on 4 hits and 3 walks.
