The Mets announced on Monday they acquired right-handed pitcher Wilmer Font from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
The Mets also transferred outfielder Yoenis Céspedes to the 60-Day Injured List to make room for Font on the 40-man roster.
A relief pitcher, Font, 28, was 1-0 with a 5.79 ERA (nine earned run/14.0 innings) and 18 strikeouts in 10 appearances for the Rays this season. He has worked 2.0 or more innings in four of those outings.
This move will give the Mets' bullpen needed depth since Jeurys Familia is out with a shoulder injury and could make them amenable to moving Seth Lugo or Robert Gsellman back to the starting rotation.
Font will join the team in San Diego on Tuesday when a corresponding 25-man roster move will be made.
The 6-4, 265-pounder was 2-3 with a 5.93 ERA (29 earned runs/44.0 innings) in 19 games, five starts with 36 strikeouts with the Dodgers, Athletics and Rays in 2018. Font had a 1.71 ERA (four earned runs/21.0 innings) in five starts last year.
Font is 3-3 with a 6.51 ERA (47 earned runs/65.0 innings) in 37 career major league games, five starts with the Rangers, Dodgers, Athletics and Rays.
