Montreal Uses Late Surge To Beat Red Bulls

The Red Bulls lost to the Montreal Impact, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena, dropping the final game of their three-game homestand in which they won the first two matches.


The Red Bulls drop to 3-2-5 on the season, with 11 points in 10 matches. They currently sit in 10th place, but just four points out of the sixth and final playoff spot (NYCFC, 15 points, 3-6-1).

The Red Bulls got on the board first when Marc Rzatkowski took a free kick and he swung it into the box to Aaron Long, who headed iin the game's first goal in the 36th minute.

This was Long's fifth career MLS goal, four of which have been via header.

It was Rzatkowski's second assist of 2019 in MLS play, and the German midfielder has recorded points in back-to-back matches (1 goal, 1 assist).

The Red Bulls head their 1-0 lead into the second half before Montreal tied it in the 64th minute when Zakaria Diallo got his first goal of the year on a feed from Maxi Urruti and Omar Browne.

Urruti got a goal of his own on a penalty kick in the 79th to give Montreal the 2-1, and that would turn out to be the game-winner.

2018 MLS SuperDraft Second Round pick Tom Barlow, who signed his first-team contract on Tuesday, made his MLS debut as he started and played 74 minutes.

The Red Bulls will take a quick trip West to face FC Dallas on Saturday, May 11 at 2 p.m. at Toyota Stadium before returning home to host defending MLS champion Atlanta United on Sunday, May 19th at 5 p.m. They then take on the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday, May 22 at 8:00 p.m. at Red Bull Arena.
