Resilient Yankees Keep Winning

@Yankees.

The Yankees have proven to be a resilient group this season, as they continue to win games despite having over 10 players on the injured list.

The thing that's admirable about the Yankees is that, no matter who is in the lineup, they are expected to win.


The Yankees embody the "next man up" mentality that Manager Aaron Boone has preached this season, and the latest example was Tuesday night's 5-4 walk-off win over Seattle at Yankee Stadium.

With Anthony Swarzak on for the bottom of the ninth to close it out for Seattle with a 4-2 lead, Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres got a one-out single.

Third baseman Gio Urshela was up next and he launched a bomb to center field for a two-run home run to tie the game at 4.  This was Urshela' s first career game-tying hit in the ninth inning or later (has two career tie-breaking, go-ahead hits in extra innings).

This was the Yankees’ first go-ahead or game-tying home run when trailing in the ninth inning or later since May 29, 2018 against Houston  when Brett Gardner hit a game-tying two-run HR in the ninth off Chris Devenski.

Cameron Maybin kept it going when he singled, and at that point, Seattle turned to Roenis Elias, who struck out Brett Gardner for the second out.

DJ LeMahieu was up next, and he laced a single to right field, and Maybin raced home for the winning run, sneaking in past the swipe tag from Seattle catcher Omar Narvaez, to seal the 5-4 win.

This was their second walk-off win of the season, with the first one back on April 21 vs. Kansas City. That game began their current run in which they are 13-4 in their last 17 games.

The Yankees now have eight comeback wins this season, and it is their first when trailing after eight innings.

Reliever Joseph Harvey earned his first Major League win as he pitched a scoreless top of the ninth.

The Yankees are now 21-14, a season-high 7 games over .500, and just 2 games out of first place. They have won three straight games, and are 4-1 on their seven-game homestand. They are 9-2 in their last 11 home games after starting 3-6.

The Yankees are are 15-5 in their last 20 games, their best stretch in that span since also going 15-5 from 8/6-26/18.

The Yankees have owned Seattle, as they are 14-3 in their last 17 games vs. the Mariners. They are 23-7 in the last 30 games between the clubs and 37-18 in the last 55, and have won seven straight games against Seattle in the Bronx (since 8/26/17), tied for their third-longest home winning streak over the M’s in series history.

LeMahieu went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 2 walks, notched his second career walk-off hit. His first was last September when he hit a two-run homer in the ninth on 9/12/18 vs. Arizona while playing for Colorado. He reached safely four times, one shy of his season high (5x, 2-for-2, 2BB, 1HP on 3/31 vs. Baltimore).

The second baseman is batting .500 (14-for-28) with 16 RBI with RISP this season. Yankees batters had been 0-for-10 with RISP tonight prior to his game-winning hit. He extended his hitting streak to 9 games, and is batting .471 (16-for-34) with 7R, 4 doubles, 9 RBI and six multi-hit efforts during the streak. He has reached safely in six of his nine plate appearances this series.

Maybin, who played left field in this one, went 2-for-4 and scored the winning run. He had a season-high 2 hits and has now reached safely in all 9 games with a plate appearance this season, while hitting safely in eight of nine. He has a .360 average and a .484 on-base percentage

Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka (6.1IP, 5H, 2ER, 2BB, 4K, 1HR) started and took a no-decision. He has allowed 2 runs-or-fewer in 5-of-8 starts in 2019. He remains undefeated in nine career starts vs. Seattle with a record of 7-0 with a 2.10 ERA (64.1IP, 47H, 16R/15ER, 7BB, 68K, 6HR). He lowered his home ERA to 3.03 (29.2IP, 10ER) in five starts at Yankee Stadium this season.

Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle allowed two unearned runs on 2H in the eighth, and his his 0-for-29 hitless streak snapped by Mitch Haniger’s one-out single. His scoreless streak was snapped at 11 appearances (9.0IP). He has still been scoreless in 14-of-16 appearances in 2019 (2ER in 0.2IP on 4/10 at Houston).
Kahnle's franchise-record streak of 11 consecutive relief appearances without a hit or run allowed (since 4/14-5/5) was snapped. He also had at least 1 strikeout in all 11 appearances, and was just the third pitcher in Major League history to record at least 1K but not allow a hit or run in at least 11 straight relief outings.
